Time Out Classic magazine defining a generation... The Challenge TimeOut is an iconic listings magazine launched in 1968 by Tony Elliott and Bob Harris (who went on to host BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test). It’s easy to say that pretty much anyone who grew up, lived in or has visited London since then will have seen or know the TimeOut brand. One of the most iconic aspects of TimeOut is the logo – the neon sign is still evident in Tottenham Court Road, London where the group is headquartered. Another is the use of good design and editorial for its covers. Leading designers and photographers like Pearce Marchbank and Rankin have designed and photographed for it. It has also featured everyone of note: Actors, Musicians, Authors, Artists. In short, it is part of the culture. Creating designs which crossed over forty years of brand evolution, covers design and typography was never going to be easy. During the development phase 50% of the group was sold to Peter Dubens and Oakley Capital. See the results of the work below. About TimeOut: For more about TimeOut look here. Project Overview & Solutions The solution often turns out more beautiful than the puzzle – Richard Dawkins Project Overview There were three main design approaches identified in the TimeOut project. Each presented different opportunities and challenges: Cover Archive – This is the richest source of designs which crosses five decades and defines the look and feel of all of those periods. It also presented a problem in rights as some photographers, illustrators and designers weren’t known. Others couldn’t be contacted or the boundaries between in-house and commissioned were blurred....

Innocent Drinks You know, that company that makes smoothies The Challenge Two main challenges: Design and research potential ways to use what Innocent do, how they manufacture as brand extensions. In addition explore the community building around the products and potential for a recycled products online store. Project Overview & Solutions All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better - Ralph Waldo Emerson Project Overview Innocent asked me to explore any avenue for product development which had its roots in their core values: leaving the world better than they found it, striving to do business in an enlightened way, taking responsibility business impact, searching for a truly sustainable business with a net positive effect on the world. This involved analysing production process, core product areas, and intentions they had in extending and developing their ‘Innocent community’. Samples of Tetrapak® pre-press runs and ‘overs’ were used as exciting raw material to create innovative new directions for recycled products. I was also involved with the FruitStock event in Regent’s Park populating the Penguin area with designs and seating. Rick Stein Chef and Author The Challenge To explore creating new designs and brand extension based on the work of Chef Rick Stein. Project Overview & Solutions The solution often turns out more beautiful than the puzzle – Richard Dawkins Project Overview I was invited to meet Rick Stein in Padstow to discuss potential areas for product development and brand extension. All of the Rick Stein business was explored and photographed from retail, cooking school to kitchen preparation areas. Although a number of potential areas were explored the project remained exploratory and research in nature. Place Invaders They came from another planet The Challenge To develop a new range of multi-functional objects and possible product game based on Space Invaders from the 1970s. Project Overview & Solutions The solution often turns out more beautiful than the puzzle – Richard Dawkins Project Overview A number of materials (ply, recycled card, perspex) and processes (die-cut and laser) were researched. Proof of concept prototypes were exhibited at 100% Design 2006. Mass production was not developed. Logotypes and packaging were developed using electrostatic materials. The transparent perspex side table was used as part of a retrospective on Space Invaders at the Science Museum.
